About JEE Main

The National Testing Agency conducts the Joint Entrance Examination (Main). Paper 1 is for undergraduate engineering programmes at NITs, IIITs, other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions and institutions funded or recognised by participating state governments. It is also the eligibility test for JEE (Advanced), which is used for the IITs. Paper 2A is for B.Arch. and Paper 2B is for B.Planning. JEE (Main) 2026 is held in two sessions. Session 1 for Paper 1 is between 21 January and 30 January 2026, and Session 2 between 2 April and 9 April 2026, both dates tentative. A candidate need not sit both sessions. If a candidate sits more than one, the better of the 2026 NTA scores is used for the merit list. There is no age limit. A candidate who passed Class XII or an equivalent examination in 2024 or 2025, or is appearing in 2026, may sit. A candidate who passed in 2023 or earlier may not. The passing year is the year the result was first declared as pass.

Paper 1 is a computer-based test in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, with equal weightage. Each subject has Section A, 20 multiple-choice questions, and Section B, 5 questions whose answer is an integer typed on the on-screen numeric keypad and rounded to the nearest integer. That is 25 questions and 100 marks a subject, 75 questions and 300 marks in all. The bulletin prints five numerical questions, not a larger set from which five are chosen, and the total of 75 includes every one of them. A candidate may leave a question unanswered: an unanswered question scores 0. A wrong answer scores −1, and this deduction applies to Section A and to Section B. A right answer scores +4. The duration table gives one time for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics together: 3 hours, or 4 hours for a PwD/PwBD candidate who is eligible for a scribe. The candidate instructions describe one countdown timer and say a candidate may move between sections and questions at any time during that period.

The paper is offered in thirteen languages: English, Hindi, Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Urdu. English and Hindi are available at every centre in India. The question paper is in English and the language chosen at registration, and that choice cannot be changed later. If the two versions differ, the English version prevails. Calculators, log tables and electronic devices are not allowed in the hall. Raw marks in each subject and the total are converted to NTA scores by a percentile normalisation across shifts. The percentile of a candidate in a shift is the percentage of candidates in that shift with a raw score equal to or below that candidate's, calculated to 7 decimal places, and the highest raw score in each shift corresponds to percentile 100. Overall merit merges the NTA scores of all shifts of both sessions. A tie in the total NTA score is broken by the NTA score in Mathematics, then Physics, then Chemistry, then a lower proportion of attempted incorrect answers to correct answers in all subjects, then in Mathematics, then Physics, then Chemistry. If the tie remains, the candidates share the rank.

For a single paper (Paper 1, or Paper 2A, or Paper 2B) at a centre in India, the fee for each session is ₹1,000 for a General male candidate, ₹800 for a female candidate, ₹900 for a Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL male candidate, ₹800 for a Gen-EWS or OBC-NCL female candidate, ₹500 for SC, ST, PwD and PwBD candidates, and ₹500 for a third-gender candidate. Centres outside India are charged more, as printed in the same table. A candidate who applies for more than one paper pays the combined-paper fee in that table. Processing charges and GST are extra. Admission to the NIT+ system (NITs, IIEST, IIITs and other participating GFTIs) follows the JoSAA and CSAB rules. The bulletin records the CSAB 2025 recommendation of at least 75% aggregate in five Class XII subjects, or 65% for SC, ST and PwD, or a place in the category-wise top 20 percentile of the board, and it says JoSAA and CSAB may change the eligibility rules. This practice test is Paper 1 only.
