About JEE Advanced

JEE (Advanced) 2026 is the entrance examination for bachelor's, integrated master's and dual-degree programmes at the IITs, at the 10+2 level. IIT Roorkee is the organising institute. Indian nationals must also qualify the B.E./B.Tech. paper of JEE (Main) 2026. The examination was held on Sunday, 17 May 2026: Paper 1 from 09:00 to 12:00 IST and Paper 2 from 14:30 to 17:30 IST. Appearing in both papers is compulsory.

Each paper is a computer-based test of three hours (180 minutes). Candidates who are allowed compensatory time get four hours. Each paper has three sections, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, on one clock: the candidate may move among the sections at any time. Answers are entered with the mouse, including a virtual keypad for numerical answers. The papers are shown in English and Hindi, and the language can be switched during the paper. If the two versions differ, the English version prevails.

The information brochure does not fix the question types or the marks. It says negative marks may be awarded for some questions and that the marking scheme is in the instructions at the time of the examination. The scheme used here is the one printed on the JEE (Advanced) 2026 papers. In each subject, Paper 1 has four single-correct questions (+3, −1), four one-or-more-correct questions (+4, with partial credit, −1), four numerical questions (+4, and 0 otherwise) and four matching-list questions (+4, −1): 16 questions and 60 marks. Paper 2 has four single-correct questions (+3, −1), five one-or-more-correct questions (+4, with partial credit, −1), five numerical questions (+4, and 0 otherwise) and two question stems with two numerical questions each (+2, and 0 otherwise): 18 questions and 60 marks. A subject is therefore 120 marks across both papers, and the aggregate is 360.

Marks in a subject are the sum of that subject in Paper 1 and Paper 2. The aggregate is Physics plus Chemistry plus Mathematics. Only candidates who sit both papers are ranked. Ranks use the aggregate. A tie is broken by higher positive marks, then higher Mathematics marks, then higher Physics marks. Inclusion in a rank list needs a minimum percentage in each subject and in the aggregate: 10% and 35% for the common rank list, 9% and 31.5% for GEN-EWS and OBC-NCL, and 5% and 17.5% for SC, ST and the PwD lists. The brochure says the aggregate percentage may be lowered. Qualifying does not by itself give a seat; seats are allotted later.

Candidates who want the B.Arch. programme at IIT Roorkee, IIT Kharagpur or IIT (BHU) Varanasi, and who have qualified JEE (Advanced), must also pass the Architecture Aptitude Test: one paper of three hours, in English only, on 4 June 2026. There is no separate rank in that test. The Joint Implementation Committee sets its cut-off.
